The Choir - About us

“The Munich Glee Club“ was how the gentlemen referred to themselves when they first started meeting to sing together in 1872. Today, the Men’s Choir of Munich is one of the oldest and tradition richest choirs in the German state of Bavaria. It brings together citizens of Munich who in a most melodious composition pursue their passion for song. They blossom in their music, they express themselves with it, in order to delight and captivate their listeners.

From traditional Bavaria to mondial and modern ... Deeply rooted Bavarian identity, spiritual reflection and contemporary cosmopolitanism all flow into the wide repertoire of the Men’s Choir of Munich. The works of Mendelssohn and Schubert are just as much an established element in their selection as are classical German folk songs and standard numbers by the Comedian Harmonists or Frank Sinatra.

Authentic Bavarian folk music comprises a part of the concerts, in particular the alpine-style Advent singing which traditionally takes place in the “Old Peter”, a true landmark of the state capital of Munich.

... just as witty as spiritual. In addition, the ensemble of singers keep the tradition of spiritual choir literature alive, oriented on the German mystic and natural scientist Hildegard von Bingen: “In music God has left mankind a reminder of the lost paradise”. The thought behind this statement: those who from time to time consciously consider that which is beautiful and good, preserve their inner sensors for life’s fine overtones, for that which cannot be expressed with words – the feeling for this paradise.

Choir singing as savoir-vivre. For the members of the Men’s Choir of Munich, singing is an expression of a way of life, of culture among all peoples and at all times. They see their music as transgenerational and as something which unites peoples; their bodies are their instrument. In regular choir rehearsals they train their bodies and their spirits for this.

Above and beyond borders. The Munich ensemble regularly embarks on choir trips abroad, particularly to the rest of Europe. It can look back on concert trips to Russia, Sweden and the U.S.; they have performed several times in the Vienna Concert Hall and have been a cultural ambassador for the Bavarian state capital of Munich. For their accomplishments the Men’s Choir of Munich have received numerous awards, for example the Zelter Plaque in the year 1982.

The Men’s Choir of Munich sings some five concerts per year, performs at a church service in the “Old Peter“ and takes part in a celebration here and there, for instance an appearance at a wedding or at the Christkindl Christmas Market.
